Alzheimers Walk 2010

Hello,

Last Saturday the Lanka Alzheimers Foundation organized a 4km walk over Galle Road of raise awareness about the disease. The Alzheimers service was asked to sell raffle tickets that would be drawn on the day, there were many different prices ranging from an airplane ticket to New York to Odel vouchers, every price was donated by many different companies.

The founders of the Lanka Alzheimers Foundation were present together with about 30 other people attending the walk. It started off at Cinnamon Grand and we walked about 4km over Galle Road and back carrying posters, balloons and handing out leaflets to passers by. The walk took about 1 and a half hours and when we came back there was the raffle draw which we sold tickets for.
With Ms. Lorraine who together
with her husband started the Lanak Alzheimers Foundation.

Overall this was a pretty succesfull event and I think we raised awareness especially because we handed out leaflets, the only thing we need to do better next year is the publication of the walk. Many people especially in school didn't know about it simply because we didn't mention it or hung up posters, but this will be done better next year. :)

Goals For This School Year

Hey everyone,

Being part of the IB diploma does not only requires commitment accedemically but also requires a lot of involvement outside of the 6 or 7 academic subjects. For this school year I have set myself some goals regarding the Creativity, Action and Service part if the IB.

Creativity -
This, I found as one of the harder ones to fulfill because I wanted it to be something I really enjoyed and wouldn't just do it because the IB says I have to. So I decided that I would start learning guitar, I have no previous experience with playing guitars so I'm starting from scratch. Together with the lessons I'm taking outside of school, I'm also joining the beginners guitar afterschool activity to enhance my learning. My goal is to be able to play a difficult song which I havn't chosen yet, by the end of the semester (December).

Action -
There are many opportunities for this both on-campus and outside of school, so I've decided that I'll do both this year to enhance my fitness.
In school I'll be trying out for SAISA Girls Football and SAISA Girls Basketball because I enjoy those sports and it's a good way of working together with people whom I normally wouldn't work with.
Outside of school I will be taking tennis lessons once a week and I will be running on our treadmill 30 minutes a day.

Service -
This year I'm a leader of DAWG and I'm also in the Alzheimer's service. I decided to combine these two because they both don't meet every week which makes it better to put equal effort into both of these services. The goal for DAWG is to raise enough money to organize a sterilization campaign towards the end of the school year for both cats and dogs, this in the previous years has been quite a succes so I hope we can live up to it again this year! For Alzheimers my goal is to raise awareness about this disease and help in anyway possible to support the Lanka Alzheimers Foundation.

Posts will follow updating on how everything is progressing  :)
